Walking Through Walls -- Kerry

I had to give myself permission to watch two hours of daytime television today.

"Watching an inaugaration is considered productive work," I countered my conscience.

I have just finished reading a memoir called "Walking Through Walls", by Phillip Smith. He wrote about growing up with a psychic father, Lew Smith, who just happened to be a famous interior designer to the stars in the post-modern 195o's cocktail world of Miami, Florida before he developed his healing vibrational energy techniques. His son claims his father was way ahead of his time.

Obama is also ahead of his time, in a way. And I hope he is also a healer. I couldn't help applying the title of the book to my blog today; this historic day when Obama indeed walked through walls of racial barriers, set his sights high, and kept on walking to the other side.

As we talked to the kindergartners about the inauguration, I realized that they have no idea how historic this is. We've had to explain it to our own children who cannot fathom the insanity and idiocy of racism.

All of the children at Roosevelt watched the inauguration. All four kindergarten classes jammed into the only room with cable.

The kids sat rapt to Itzakh and Yo-Yo. They watched Obama take the oath. They didn't see the black man, they saw the new President of the United States. It did not seem remarkable. There were no eptithets or outbursts, or regurgitated parent-speak.

I realized we may be raising the first generation of color blind children, who when they look at a president see only the man or woman.

Then they went to recess and played with Angel, Anay, Benicio, Leticia, Cedric, James and Dylan.

In Sunday school we used to sing "Jesus loves the little children, red and yellow black and white." Glad we're not singing that song anymore and instead are raising colorblind children, as you so well put it.

What a beautiful metaphor. Walking through a wall indeed.
